The Dr. Charles Kernodle Scholarship was established on October 26, 2017 to honor Dr. Kernodle's 100 year birthday and his 66 years of service as the doctor on the sidelines of the Walter M. Williams High School Football team by his family, his friends, and the Kernodle Clinic.

The award is given annually to a Williams High School senior member of the football team to attend any type of post high school education (university, college, community college or vocational training). The award is based on financial need and demonstrated personal characteristics of a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and high moral character—all of which are characteristics of Dr. Kernodle. The awardee is chosen by a selection committee consisting of WHS coaching staff and guidance department representatives every spring and is awarded at the annual awards assembly in May.
